Hydrotherapy Services

Hydrotherapy is a form of therapy used to treat a range of conditions through different types of exercise in a pool of water.

At Total Health Choice, hydrotherapy may be guided by either a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist, depending on your preference.

The purpose of hydrotherapy-based rehabilitation is to help people enjoy exercise, relieve pain and improve physical health, including range of motion, metabolism and heart rate.

Hydrotherapy commonly takes place in pools around Melbourne heated between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius. It may also take place at local beaches or swimming spots where this aligns with a client’s goals.

With trust, compassion and care, we help adults aged over 18 with disability undertake safe, enjoyable hydrotherapy, rain, hail or shine.

How Hydrotherapy Works at Total Health Choice

Please contact us to make an enquiry. We complete a questionnaire to help ensure the client can safely undertake hydrotherapy and that there are no conditions or medications that may be contraindications.

A Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist then visits the client’s home to perform a functional assessment and develop a program that may be beneficial in the water.

Our Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist then books a follow-up appointment at a pool chosen by the client that has hydrotherapy facilities. We contact the venue to organise scheduling and facility payment.

During the first pool session, we evaluate performance in the water, learn more about the client’s goals and develop an exercise plan that we can build on together.

What Types of Exercises Can We Do?

Hydrotherapy can allow people to tolerate more movement. When submerged in water, body weight may be reduced by up to 90%.

Exercise selection is tailored to the individual. Activities may include:

  • Walking in the water and reactive side-stepping
  • Thoracic rotation exercises
  • Using kickboards for thoracic extension
  • Single-leg balance work
  • Practising swimming techniques
  • Tricep extensions using an elastic band between the ankle and hand

Hydrotherapy FAQ

In theory, this is a service we can provide, such as two NDIS participants attending the pool with two clinicians.

However, this is very rare. Most hydrotherapy services are delivered one-to-one.

Yes. Consented family members or carers are welcome to attend.

Where family members or carers wish to swim themselves, our clinicians cannot provide support to them because the clinician is there to support the client.

Total Health Choice does not provide a transport service.

Participants need to organise their own transport to and from the pool. This may be through family, public transport, taxi or another suitable arrangement.

Hydrotherapy and home-based therapy can work hand in hand and be customised around your needs.

For example, a person may choose Physiotherapy weekly, Hydrotherapy fortnightly and Exercise Physiology monthly.

Pricing is the same whether therapy occurs at home or at the pool. Please contact us for pricing.

After an initial assessment, we create a formalised service agreement so you have clarity and control over the frequency and funding of hydrotherapy.
