Paediatric Occupational Therapy at Total Health Choice

Paediatric occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need to participate confidently in everyday life. This includes self care, play, learning, emotional regulation and social interaction. Occupational therapy for kids focuses on building independence, coordination and confidence in a way that feels achievable and supportive.

At Total Health Choice, our paediatric occupational therapy services are personalised for each child’s strengths, challenges and goals. Our therapists support fine motor development, sensory processing, emotional regulation and daily living skills so children can engage more comfortably at home, at school and in the community. Therapy is practical, child centred and guided by real life outcomes, not just clinical exercises.

We deliver kids occupational therapy through both mobile visits and our dedicated paediatric OT clinic across Melbourne. Working in familiar environments helps children feel safe, relaxed and ready to learn. Our team also collaborates closely with families and other allied health professionals, including our paediatric physiotherapy and children’s physiotherapy services, to ensure coordinated and well-rounded support for every child.

  • Building everyday independence

What Is Paediatric Occupational Therapy?

Paediatric OT is therapy that supports children to participate in everyday activities that form the building blocks of independence, including:

  • Fine Motor Skills: writing, cutting and using zippers
  • Gross Motor Skills: balance, posture and core strength
  • Executive Functioning: planning, focus and problem solving
  • Sensory Processing: managing loud noises, busy spaces or seeking input
  • Emotional Regulation: big feelings, meltdowns and transitions
  • Self Care Skills: toileting, dressing and brushing teeth
  • Social Participation: play skills, friendships and turn-taking

We use play-led, evidence-based strategies to help kids overcome challenges and reach meaningful goals in their day-to-day world.

  • Support for each child’s needs

“You don’t need a diagnosis to start, just a child you want to see thrive.”

  • Early support can help

When to Consider Occupational Therapy

Parents and teachers often notice small signs before bigger challenges appear. Early support through occupational therapy for kids can make daily life feel calmer, more manageable and more positive.

You may want to consider paediatric occupational therapy if a child:

  • Has difficulty focusing, following routines or staying organised
  • Struggles with handwriting, scissors or fine motor coordination
  • Shows strong sensory sensitivities to noise, touch, clothing or lighting
  • Becomes easily frustrated or overwhelmed during transitions
  • Finds everyday self care challenging, such as dressing, feeding or toileting
  • Avoids play activities or has trouble joining in with peers

Kids occupational therapy helps identify what is getting in the way and builds practical skills that support confidence, independence and participation. If you are unsure whether support is needed, an occupational therapy assessment can provide clarity and guidance for next steps.

  • What therapy looks like

What to Expect During a Session

Paediatric occupational therapy sessions are designed to feel safe, engaging and supportive for your child.

Each session typically includes:

Observation through play

The Occupational Therapist observes how your child moves, plays and interacts. This helps us understand strengths, challenges and sensory or motor needs in a natural way.

Individualised goal setting

We work closely with parents and, where relevant, educators to set clear, meaningful goals. Goals focus on daily life, not just therapy tasks.

Hands-on, activity-based learning

Sessions use play, movement and practical activities to build skills such as coordination, emotional regulation, attention and independence.

Ongoing progress and shared strategies

You receive regular updates and simple strategies that can be used at home or school. Therapy is adjusted as your child grows and gains confidence.

Our focus is always on helping children feel capable, supported and proud of what they can do, and giving parents the tools to help them thrive at home.

Paediatric Occupational Therapy FAQs

Children can begin paediatric occupational therapy at many stages of development. Some start in early childhood, while others begin once challenges appear at school or during daily routines. Early support can help build confidence and skills sooner.

Occupational therapy for kids supports skills that underpin learning and participation. This includes attention, emotional regulation, fine motor control, independence and confidence with classroom and playground tasks.

Goals are created together with parents and carers. They are practical, meaningful and linked to everyday life at home or school. Progress is reviewed regularly and goals are updated as your child develops new skills.

Yes. Our kids occupational therapy team can collaborate with teachers, support staff and other allied health providers when appropriate. This helps ensure consistent strategies across environments.

Sessions usually run for 60 minutes. The length of a therapy program varies depending on goals, needs and progress. Some children benefit from short-term support, while others require ongoing paediatric occupational therapy.

Clinic sessions offer a structured therapy space. Mobile occupational therapy kids sessions take place at home, school or in the community. Mobile sessions allow skills to be practiced in real-life environments where children learn and play every day.

If you are unsure whether occupational therapy is right for your child, our team is happy to talk through your concerns and guide you on next steps.
