Mechanical Beds

Mechanical beds can support safer transfers, positioning, comfort and quality sleep for people with changing mobility or care needs.

Our mobile Occupational Therapists assess the person, bedroom environment and daily routines to recommend the right mechanical bed and related equipment.

We Help People Access Appropriate Beds

A mechanical bed is a form of assistive equipment that can be adjusted to suit a person’s sleeping needs.

Functions may include foot and head tilt, high and low positioning, or a full-bed tilt.

Mechanical beds are electrically operated and connected to a power point. This can reduce manual-handling demands when adjusting the bed and make the equipment easier to operate.

Our compassionate Occupational Therapists visit people in their homes, review the environment and prescribe the mechanical bed that best suits the individual situation.

Customisation for Mechanical Beds

Mattresses

Mattresses designed for mechanical beds need particular coils because they must be able to fold and move with the bed.

Our Occupational Therapists also consider mattress softness or firmness and any pressure-care concerns relevant to the client.

Bed Tables

A bed table is designed to sit over the bed, allowing people to enjoy leisure activities or eat while in bed.

It can also be used to store belongings. Some versions tilt to support easier reading.

Bedside Commodes

A bedside commode sits next to the bed and includes a bucket, supporting people who are unable to travel safely between the bedroom and toilet.

They are height adjustable for different users and commonly include non-slip rubber feet.

Considerations When Prescribing a Mechanical Bed

Prescribing the correct bed is important for comfort and promoting quality sleep.

  • Carer manual-handling considerations when supporting a person in and out of bed
  • The location and controls of the bed, including whether the person understands how to use the backrest, knee lift, raising and lowering functions
  • Minimising the bed profile so bedroom space is maximised
  • Understanding that bedside rails are typically not used because they can create accessibility issues
  • Modern features such as USB connectivity and battery backups

Total Health Choice supports people to access a cost-effective and clinically appropriate mechanical bed.

Advanced Functions of Mechanical Beds

Mechanical beds can include several functions designed to support comfort, transfers and positioning.

One feature is customisable height. A lower bed height can be useful where someone is at a high risk of falls.

There are also situations where the bed may be elevated to assist a person with poor lower-limb strength to transfer out of bed. Positioning the person at the correct knee angle can help them generate more power to stand.

Head-tilt functionality can support positioning and allow a person to sit up in bed.

Some modern bed setups include a monkey-bar handle above the bed, helping people use their arms to pull themselves upwards in bed.

Spatial Requirements for Mechanical Beds

Adequate space is important on either side of a mechanical bed.

This allows the individual to access the bed from their left or right side, depending on their stronger or weaker side.

Space is also needed for other assistive technology, including hoists, lifting machines and carers.

Our experienced Occupational Therapists consider the needs of people sharing a room, including situations where two people occupy the bedroom space.
