Lifts

Occupational Therapy support for residential lifts and complex home modifications that improve access between levels of a home.

We assess mobility, future needs and the home environment, then work with you and relevant builders or engineers to explore appropriate options.

Lift Options and Home Modifications

Modern lift options are available for some residential homes to transport people safely from one level to another.

Following an assessment by an Occupational Therapist, we can prescribe a lift where appropriate and support the complex home modifications required for installation.

Lifts are generally considered for people with significant mobility needs. Because they are high-cost and high-risk items, they are not commonly approved through the NDIS. They may be considered where remaining in the current home with a lift is more appropriate than relocating to a different property with equivalent support.

Types of Lifts

There are multiple lift options available. The most suitable option depends on a person’s condition, mobility needs and the structure of the home.

  • Chair lifts: A chair lift may be considered where the structure or available space does not allow a full lift. It can be a lower-cost option, installed along an existing staircase. In some homes, however, a chair lift may reduce stair access for others.
  • Gate lifts: These can assist where a person needs to move over internal level changes. The person enters the lift, closes the gate and is raised to the required surface level.
  • Fully enclosed lifts: These lifts transport a person between levels within an enclosed cabin. Compact residential options may be installed by appropriately qualified builders and engineers.

Control options vary by manufacturer and can be discussed during the assessment process.

Home Assessments for Lifts

Our Occupational Therapists complete home assessments to determine whether a lift may be suitable.

We first complete a functional assessment to understand current mobility needs, goals, requirements and, where relevant, the expected progression of a diagnosis or condition. This information is important when supporting an NDIS funding application.

After reviewing the home environment and physical space, we may arrange a joint visit with a builder and/or engineer. They can take measurements and photographs, then prepare a quote for installation.

Home Lift Installation Process

Builders are generally affiliated with specific lift suppliers. Once the available options are identified, a lift considered reasonable and appropriate for the person’s condition can be selected with input from the Occupational Therapist.

When funding has been approved by the relevant body, the Occupational Therapist and builder work with the participant to confirm a construction plan and timeline.

Installation can take more than four weeks because substantial structural modifications may be required. Once the lift is installed, the Occupational Therapist can revisit to support adjustments, training and safe use.

Training may include the participant, family members and carers, with practical guidance around manual handling and safety practices.
