Bed Prescription

There are different types of assistive technology items that can facilitate safer bed transfers and promote independence.

Total Health Choice is experienced in providing assessments, prescription and ongoing support for people looking to optimise their bed setup.

Whether the recommendation is for a mechanical or standard bed, our dedicated Occupational Therapists consider safety with transfers, night-time safety, comfort and the person’s individual needs before prescribing the appropriate option.

We employ experienced Occupational Therapists who are mobile across Melbourne. We work with clients aged over 14, including NDIS participants, Home Care Package holders and private-paying individuals.

Our Occupational Therapists complete a comprehensive assessment that considers all relevant areas of the home, not just the bedroom.

  • People looking to improve safety in residential aged care, Supported Independent Living, shared or private homes
  • People recovering after surgery
  • People with a history of falls

How Does the Process Work at Total Health Choice?

1. Referral and Functional Assessment

Please contact us or submit a referral through our referrals page to start the process.

Once the referral is received and an appointment is scheduled, an Occupational Therapist visits the person at home or their primary place of residence.

The Occupational Therapist completes a functional assessment and provides a list of recommended beds to support the individual’s needs.

2. Report, Quote and Equipment Trial

Once the report is completed and sent to the relevant party, the Occupational Therapist can arrange a quote, invoice and trial of the relevant item to ensure it can be used safely.

This may be a trial in the home with a bedding specialist company or a trial at a bedding retail store.

The Occupational Therapist can meet the person at home with the supplier, or attend the bed supplier with them to trial different beds and options.

3. Choice and Control

Total Health Choice encourages choice and control.

You can purchase the bed from any provider you choose, provided they are compatible with your funding or plan type.

  • A practical outcome

Read a Wonderful Success Story

A participant was having difficulty with bed transfers. Due to spasticity in his lower limbs, he had difficulty lifting his legs onto the bed.

He developed strategies to manage bed transfers, but the process took more than 15 minutes every morning and evening. This resulted in fatigue, exhaustion and frustration.

As the participant’s diagnosis was degenerative, his motor control continued to decline over time. The Occupational Therapist recommended a mechanical bed to assist with bed transfers.

The Occupational Therapist arranged a trial to ensure he could use the mechanical bed safely, then completed the appropriate documentation and the item was approved.

Sleeping is a natural daily task. Supporting an optimal sleeping environment can improve safety, comfort, rest and overall quality of life.

Bed Prescription FAQ

A mechanical bed can be recommended and purchased with an additional companion bed for a participant who sleeps with a partner.

The bed can look like a standard queen bed, with one side providing hi-lo and head-and-foot tilt functions. The companion bed generally does not include functions unless they are necessary and reasonable.

A mechanical bed can assist with transfers to walking frames through hi-lo and head-and-foot tilt functions.

A person who requires a wheelchair may need assistance from a carer or health professional for transfers, including bed transfers.

A comprehensive assessment is undertaken, including observation of transfers and assessment of mobility in the home and community.

An appropriate bed can help ease pressure on joints, support posture and promote a better night’s sleep.

The source content notes that good sleep can reduce stress, improve memory, improve mood and support recovery.

These functions can help a person maintain independence and access the community.

An electronic bed can be moved into various positions using a remote control.

Some controls are more complex because they include multiple functions, while others are simple and easy to use.

The controls depend on the type of mechanical bed prescribed. The user presses the relevant buttons to raise or lower the bed to a comfortable position.
